Great Beginnings NY Breast Feeding Series: Strategy 1 & 2

The purpose of this webinar was to focus on Great Beginnings NY Strategies 1 and 2.  The hospitals that joined the initiative were introduced and early management of the breastfeeding mothers was reviewed.  The presenters reviewed the value of sharing monthly hospital breastfeeding data with staff, the importance of educating staff about the negative impact of formula supplementation on breastfeeding, and the use of supplementation guidelines.

After this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the most common situations where supplementation is not indicated.
  • Understand how assessing hospital’s data on exclusive breastfeeding and formula supplementation of breastfed infants can support Strategy 1.
  • Know the importance of educating mothers on the impact of formula supplementation on the establishment of breastfeeding during the birth hospitalization.
  • Describe how supplementation guidelines help with making decisions about breastfeeding management.
