Cancer Mapping - The NYSDOH Cancer Surveillance Improvement Initiative

Program Description:
The speaker discusses the Cancer Surveillance Improvement Initiative which includes the production of maps and other graphic representations that track the incidence of cancer, along with accompanying explanatory and health education materials. Its ultimate goal is to increase understanding of the causes and risk factors for cancer and to promote prevention and early detection. ZIP Code level maps of breast, colorectal and lung cancer and county level maps detailing incidence of 11 types of cancer have been released.
Objectives:
As a result of this program, participants will be able
to:
- Describe the criteria for the success of a cancer mapping program
- Describe how cancer mapping is done
- Describe the significance of the ratio of observed versus expected number of cancers.
