Dispelling the Myths of Arthritis: How to Take Control
Satellite broadcast originally aired May 15, 2003

Arthritis affects about 4.7 million adult New Yorkers, including 1.5 million seniors 65 years of age or older. Despite the number of people living with the disease, many assume it is a natural part of aging and do not seek early medical treatment. There are things that can be done to control the symptoms of arthritis and manage the disease. This presentation will discuss the facts about arthritis: what it is and isn’t, whom it affects, how it can be managed, and what part public health plays in arthritis education and management.

Speakers: Dr. Ami Milton, M.D., Board Certified in Rheumatology and Internal Medicine; Nancy Simington, Program Director, Long Island Chapter, Arthritis Foundation

Objectives
As a result of this program, participants will be able to describe:

  • the risk factors, both modifiable and non-modifiable, of arthritis and be able to identify ways to manage the disease with self management techniques.
