In his plenary address at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s 17th Annual National Forum in December 2005, Donald M. Berwick, MD, President and CEO of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, reflected on “the sources and meaning of “power” in health care” as the final six months of the IHI’s initiated 100,000 Lives Campaign, aimed at saving 100,000 needless deaths from medical errors by June 14, 2006, began. In his address, Dr. Berwick reflected on achievements of organizations involved in the 100,000 Lives Campaign and talked about “Sources of Optimism” as well as the challenges of the campaign.
