Basic Environmental Health Program

Recreational Injury Prevention & Bathing Facility Inspection
(EH 108)

This two-day course includes the following topics:

  • Injury Epidemiology
  • Bathing Facility Inspection

Injury Epidemiology

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand that injuries are predictable events and not random.
  • Identify the principal kinds of prevention strategies.
  • Understand the Haddon Matrix and its application to injury investigation.
  • Consider the choice of injury control measures.

Bathing Facility Inspection

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the component parts of a swimming recirculation system and their function, including chemical parameters.
  • Describe water circulation in a pool and the relationship with water quality.
  • Identify and describe features in or around a pool or beach that are potential safety hazards.
  • Describe factors affecting lifeguard supervision and surveillance or a pool or beach.
  • Identify contributing factors to drowning and discuss prevention strategies.
  • Identify unsafe diving environments and practices.

This course also has a required field exercise.

Priority for this course is given to environmental health personnel. Other public health staff may register on a space-available basis.
