Assistantships and Fellowships
Graduate assistantships and full tuition scholarships
are awarded on a competitive basis to all Ph.D. students
admitted into the BMS program. Graduate assistantship
stipends range from $21,000 to $24,000 per year. Most
students are supported on faculty research grants by
the end of their first year. Students supported on an
assistantship receive comprehensive health insurance.
Special fellowships awarded on a competitive basis
are also available.
Special fellowships and assistantships are available
for minority students.
Applicants to the doctoral program may apply for a Fellowship in Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, which includes a competitive stipend, tuition, health insurance, and travel to a scientific meeting. This is an interdisciplinary program, funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID), to prepare the next generation of scientists who will develop integrated research programs in biodefense preparedness and response to infectious threats. Fellows will receive broad training in bioterrorist agents, emerging infectious disease, and epidemiology. Candidates who wish to apply for this fellowship must be either a US citizen or a permanent resident, and must submit a brief essay discussing their interests and outlining their goals in the area of biodefense and emerging infectious diseases.
