Probably no other disease in human history has been associated with social and political activism to the extent that the HIV epidemic has. Especially early in the epidemic, most persons infected with HIV were from socially marginalized populations lacking political power. attention from more established organizations, both in providing critical information about the disease and in mobilizing public opinion to enact legislation responding to the epidemic.
