Center for Health Workforce Studies

The Center for Health Workforce Studies (CHWS), established in 1996, is based at the School of Public Health, University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY). Its mission is to provide timely, accurate data and conduct policy relevant research about the health workforce. Its research supports and promotes health workforce planning and policymaking at local, regional, state, and national levels. Today, CHWS is a national leader in the field of health workforce studies.

It currently has 2 federal cooperative agreements to serve as:

1) an Oral Health Workforce Research Center
2) a Health Workforce Technical Assistance Center

It also has several contracts with the New York State Department of Health to monitor the health workforce in the state.

CHWS receives grants and contracts from foundations, health facilities, professional associations, and government agencies. With this funding, CHWS collects, tracks, analyzes, interprets, and disseminates information about the health workforce. The Center’s work assists health, professional, and education organizations, policy makers and planners, and other stakeholders to understand issues related to the supply, demand, distribution, and use of health workers, in efforts to improve access to quality health care.
