Newcomer Children in California

• The major goal of this project is to analyze differences for children who live in specific localities in California with large immigrant populations (and selected cities outside California, such as New York City, Miami, and Chicago) by immigrant generation and country of origin regarding their demographic, educational, economic, and neighborhood and housing situations.

Geography of Economic Opportunity of America's Children

• The major goals of this project are to (1) analyze changes between 1980 and 2000 in the extent to which differential immigration by country of origin is responsible for increasing race/ethnic diversity of children in 276 specific metropolitan areas, and the nonmetropolitan areas of the 50 states, (2) examine the relative economic status of children in 2000 by race/ethnicity and immigrant generation/country of origin for specific localities using measures of poverty designed to overcome weaknesses in the official measure, and (3) assess for 2000 the differential spatial exposure of children to neighborhood circumstances likely to foster or undermine their development.
