APPROVAL OF ART HISTORY MAJOR

 

 

IT IS HEREBY PROPOSED THAT THE FOLLOWING BE ADOPTED:

 

 

  1. That the Faculty-Initiated Interdisciplinary Major in Art History be approved as a regular major.

 

  1. That this be forwarded to the President for approval.

 

  1. That this change take effect immediately upon approval of the proposal by SUNY.

 

 

RATIONALE:

 

In 1992 the Art History major was brought back to the campus as a faculty-initiated offering, and between then and spring 2004 approximately 150 students have received their B.A. in this discipline. Currently, about 30-40 students a year major in this area. The UAC believes this program should be registered with the state as a regular major.

 

No additional resources are requested. The requirements for the proposed major are identical to what would be required for the faculty-initiated interdisciplinary major.

 

The UAC has therefore enthusiastically approved this proposal for consideration by the University Senate.

DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MAJOR IN ART HISTORY

 

The purpose of the Art History major is to introduce students to the principles and methods of art history, and to encourage their intellectual exploration of art and architecture in historical context.  The Art History major prepares students for graduate work in Art History and Museum Studies. Most of the core faculty, who handle all advisement and internship supervision, are in the Art Department.  The majority of the curriculum is drawn from the Art Department, with some courses drawn from Anthropology and other departments.

 

General Program B.A.: A minimum of 36 credits:
