Janet Stamatel's research focuses on the relationship between large-scale social changes and subsequent social problems. Her current research examines how the processes of democratization and marketization have affected crime rates in post-communist Eastern Europe . She is also concerned with assessing and improving quantitative measurements and methods used in cross-national crime research.
Prior to joining the faculty at Albany , Professor Stamatel worked for several years at the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) at the University of Michigan . She specialized in issues related to data collection, management, sharing, and analysis in the fields of crime and justice, as well as the other social science disciplines. Professor Stamatel is part of the IT Commons at UAlbany, working to integrate information technology into teaching and research.
