The National Death Penalty Archive, the first archive in the nation that is exclusively dedicated to the history of the death penalty in the United States, opened August 9, 2005.
The archives are housed in the University at Albany's M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives. The concept for the repository originated with the School of Criminal Justice's Capital Punishment Research Initiative. In opening the archive, President Hall said the death penalty is among the most contentious issues today, and he added the archives are important because history is "the beacon of freedom."
