Most individuals experience government through their interactions with public agencies from schools to tax collectors to the post office. Though some scholarly work examines the nitty gritty details of public policy to better understand a particular policy, our focus at UAlbany is to use policy to answer broader political questions about how government operates and the role of politics in citizens' lives in the US and in comparative perspective.
With our unique relationship to New York's capital, we have many opportunities for cross-disciplinary and applied work. Our faculty members are affiliated with the Rockefeller Institute of Government, we work with scholars in the Schools of Education and Public Health as well as the Department of Public Administration and Policy, and we have a regular speaker series. Public policy is a growing field for master's degrees, and our program prepares students for positions in political science departments and public policy programs.
