According to Dean Frank J. Thompson, “These
rankings reflect extraordinary effort and achievement
by the faculty, staff and students of Rockefeller
College. We have worked very hard to foster synergy
among first-rate academic instruction, cutting-edge
research, and the immersion of our students in
the practical experience provided by one of the
leading laboratories of government in the United
States -- the Capital District of New York State.
I think the rankings partly reflect our success
in achieving this synergy.”
The MPA & MPP degrees at Rockefeller
College focus on preparing men and women from
varied backgrounds to excel in careers in analysis
and public management. George Richardson, chair
of the Department of Public Administration and
Policy, attributes the national recognition to “excellence
among our faculty as scholars; practitioners
and teachers; and as mentors of future scholars
who carry our reputation with them.”Richardson
also believes some of the College’s greatest
assets and strengths come from the strong scholarship
and research being done within the Rockefeller
College Research Centers, as well as partner
centers within the University at Albany.
Research Centers within Rockefeller
College include the Center for Legislative Development;
The Center for Policy Research; The Center for
Women in Government & Civil Society; The
Institute for Traffic Safety Management & Research;
and the Professional Development Program. University
Centers such as the Center for Technology and
Government also work collaboratively with Rockefeller
College faculty and students on key issues facing
governments and nonprofits.
U.S. News & World Report rankings
for public affairs programs are based on a nation-wide
survey of 253 programs in public affairs that
confer the MPA & MPP degrees. The National
Association of Schools of Public Affairs & Administration
(NASPAA) and the Association for Public Policy
Analysis and Management (APPAM) provide the program
lists to U.S. News & World Report to conduct
the surveys. Respondents were asked to rank the
academic programs based on excellence in curriculum,
scholarship, and the quality of faculty and graduates.
