One-Year International Exchange
The University at
Albany has an active exchange program
with many universities throughout
the World and we have hosted students
interested in one-year exchanges
from their home institutions. In
such exchanges, the student is able
to take courses at the University
at Albany that allow the student
to gain an American perspective on
a topic, while learning more about
the United States by living and learning
in the country. Traditionally, the
Department arranges the student's
courses in order that the student
is able to transfer the credit earned
at SUNY to the home institution upon
the completion of their year.
Students from universities
in Europe have been particularly
successful in arranging such exchanges
through scholarship programs (such
as the program at the Free University
of Berlin) or direct university-to
university exchanges (as exist at
the University of Wurzburg in Germany,
Tilburg University in the Netherlands,
and a variety of other sister institutions
in Europe). The table below lists
universities that have direct exchange
programs with the University at Albany:
State University of New York.
Such students often
enroll in the Non-Degree Program as
part of the Masters degree. Several
recent international exchange students
have completed the Masters program
itself during their short stay with
the Department and the Department
supports exchange students who wish
to enrol in the degree programs.
In addition, several exchange students
have returned upon the completion
of the degree in their home country
and completed either the Masters
or Ph.D program at SUNY in order
to round out their education.
Although English
is the language of instruction, the
various members of the Department
are fluent in a wide range of languages
besides English, including Spanish,
German, and French. Further, international
students comprise an important part
of the social and academic life of
the Department. The program has hosted
students from all parts of the World.
In the last two years, the program
has hosted students from Germany,
the Netherlands, Korea, Norway, Turkey,
China, France, Chile, Colombia, and
Canada.
The Department of
Political Science actively encourages
international students interested
in pursuing graduate study to apply
for admission to our graduate program.
