| Masters in Public Affairs
and Policy |
The Master
of Public Affairs and Policy program strives
to prepare students for careers as policy
analysts and leaders in public service both
in and out of government. The curriculum
provides students with analytic and quantitative
skills to frame policy issues, deal with
their institutional and political contexts,
and bring about effective action directed
at the formulation, approval, implementation
and evaluation of policy.
The
Master of Public Affairs and Policy degree
requires
a minimum of 45 credit hours distributed
among required courses, policy specialty
and a Master's Essay. In addition,
policy students without 2 years of appropriate,
full-time employment experience in responsible
positions in the public sector are required
to take a one-semester, non-credit internship
to advance their understanding of public
policy.
The Master of
Public Affairs and Policy program combines
a commitment to core knowledge with a flexibility
that allows students to pick a particular
substantive policy sphere for emphasis. The
School provides the required courses but
students can draw on the offerings of faculty
from across Rockefeller College and the University.
While strong on domestic issues, the policy
program also has much to offer students interested
in international affairs.

A student who has successfully
completed an equivalent graduate-level course
may select a substitute course for a required
course with the approval of the Director
of the Public Policy Program.
The special character of the public policy degree derives substantially from
the requirement that all students must select or design an individualized
policy concentration. They must complete at least three graduate courses
(minimum of 9 credits) in a substantive policy area such as crime, health,
welfare, urban affairs, or environmental policy, and write their master's
essay in this policy area.
Students may
select from established policy fields or
design other fields of study from appropriate
graduate offerings in any department, college,
or school of the University, with the approval
of the Director of the Public Policy Program.
Essay
The tailored program of study culminates in the Master's Essay--a 50-page
paper based on substantive research and analysis related to the policy specialty.
Prior to graduation, and after completing a draft of the essay and receiving
clearance from a faculty advisor and a reader, students present their essays
in PUB 507 or 522. Students
enroll for four credit hours in the Master's Essay (PUB 698). |
