Certificate Program Admissions Information

Public Management
The graduate certificates in Public Management, Nonprofit Management and Leadership,
and Women & Public Policy
are designed to develop student capabilities and expand student interests. Each can be taken by itself, or as exploratory study leading to the MPA or MPP, or as an add- on to the MPA or MPP degree.

• Students beginning with one of these certificates who decide to continue on for an MPA or MPP may count toward the masters all the certificate courses they have taken that fit their proposed course of masters study.
• Students in the MPA or MPP programs or graduates of these programs may decide to
extend their coursework to obtain one of these certificates by taking at least three additional courses not counted toward their masters.
• Graduates of our MPA or MPP programs should also be aware of the opportunity to further their studies by pursuing the Certificate for Advanced Study in Planning and Policy Analysis.

This specialization provides a foundation in management for persons engaged in or planning careers in management or supervision in the public service. Public management courses focus on techniques of organizational analysis, budgeting, planning, and decision-making.

Legislative Administration

This area of study focuses upon special problems of working in the legislature or working as a legislative liaison. Classes will examine legislative structures, comparing strengths and weaknesses, and offers extensive contact with practitioners, scholars, and associations involved in legislative administration.

This specialization provides an intensive exposure to health policy and management for individuals contemplating planning, advocacy and leadership roles. The courses are designed to provide a set of analytical skills and an appreciation of the key trade-offs and issues that confront policy makers.

The Information Strategy and Management specialization prepares public managers to understand, apply, and leverage information and technology in designing public services and solving public problems. It focuses on the interaction of policy, management, and technology domains in single organizations, and in multi-organizational and intergovernmental settings.
