Internships

Is an internship required for all MPA students?
Either an internship, concurrent employment in public affairs, or two years of previous work experience in public affairs is required to graduate with an MPA from Rockefeller College.

Why do I have to have an internship?
Participation in an internship is a life-enhancing and life-changing experience. It creates opportunities to try different career options, gain hands-on experience, build your resume, travel to new places, make a valuable impact on society, and develop relationships that enhance your professional network. It can also help you narrow your career options to find the career that works for you.

I already have a political, nonprofit, or other public sector job. Am I required to get an internship?
Holding a public sector job for two years or longer may serve in place of the required internship. We require these individuals who already have these jobs, or who have had these jobs in the past, to submit an Internship Waiver form for review. This way, we can keep track of who still has to complete an internship and whose work experience serves in place of an internship. For more information on internship waivers visit here.

When do I fulfill my internship requirement?
Students may begin an internship at any point in time; however, we recommend that students wait until their second semester. Students should begin their internship no later than the third semester in the program in order to complete the hour requirement before graduation. International students may have some visa restrictions regarding their internships and should consult International Student and Scholar Services.

How many hours must I work at my internship?
Over the course of your program, you must complete 480 hours of internship service. Each student will establish a schedule of hours at the beginning of his/her internship. Some internship sites are more flexible than others, so be sure to ask about hours during the interview process, or at the time of the offer.

Do I have to complete all hours at one internship site?
No, you can spread your hours over multiple internship sites, though most students complete their hours at 1-2 sites.

Will I be paid?
The majority of internships are paid and can help defray the costs of living expenses and tuition, but each internship site is different. If an internship is unpaid, many students supplement their income by working at a part-time job.

Do I get to choose my internship location?
Yes. While the Director of Internships and Career Services is available to assist with students' internship searches, it is ultimately the responsibility of each student to secure an internship. Students should be proactive in their search and start the process as early as possible.

How do I find out about internship opportunities that are available?
Students can search for and apply for internship and job positions on Handshake, University at Albany's online job board.

What forms do I need to fill out for my internship?
Students are required to log and evaluate their internship on Handshake. Their supervisor must also evaluate them on Handshake. For more information including deadlines look here.

Where can I get or submit internship forms?
All forms are located and submitted online through Handshake.

Resume and Cover Letters

Can I get help with writing my resume and a cover letter?
Yes.  All students will receive assistance in writing a resume and a cover letter upon their acceptance to Rockefeller College.

I've never written a resume or cover letter before. What should I do?
Look at the Career Handbook. It has instructions on how to format a resume and what details to include, as well as several examples of strong resumes. The handbook also has guidelines on writing your cover letter. When in doubt, use the STAR Formula. Talk about a Situation you were in, the Task you were given, the Action you took, and the Result that came of it.

How do I view job postings or submit a resume for review?

Create an account on Handshake. This is where we post all of our job and internship opportunities. This is also where you will submit all your documents for review and approval by our office.

What is the Resume Book?
The Resume Book is a compilation of resumes which we send out to several employers seeking to hire Rockefeller students and recent graduates for jobs and internships. Several of the job openings and internships that are only open to Rockefeller students are filled through the Resume Book.

When does the Resume Book go out?
We send the resume book out three times a year- autumn, spring, and summer. We typically require students to submit their resumes by late August to be included in the autumn book, by mid-November for the spring book, and by early April for the summer book.

How can my resume be included in the Resume Book?
Submit your resume to our office through Handshake for review. Include an objective statement, clearly stating if you are seeking an internship or full-time employment. Contact our office via email to notify us of your interest.

Can you review my resume or cover letter?
Absolutely! Submit it to Handshake, and we will review within 1-2 business days. Please note that you may need to revise and submit your documents several times before they are approved. Be patient- we know what we are doing, and we do a very good job of it. We just want to ensure that you are representing yourself as best as you can. After your document is approved, wait a few minutes before submitting a job application. It takes Handshake a few minutes to recognize new documents as being approved.
