Mary Beth Labate, MPA ’86

Mary Beth Labate serves as senior advisor for fiscal policy to SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher.  Prior to her appointment, Ms. Labate served as director of the New York State Division of the Budget for Governor Andrew Cuomo.  In her current capacity, Ms. Labate provides advice and consultation to the Chancellor on fiscal opportunities and challenges across the SUNY system, with the goal of meeting the Chancellor’s completion and access agendas.

As director of the budget and previously as the division’s first deputy director, Ms. Labate was responsible for the overall development and management of the State’s $150 billion fiscal plan, including overseeing the preparation of budget recommendations for all state agencies and programs, economic and revenue forecasting, tax policy, fiscal planning, capital financing, and management of the state’s debt portfolio.  Ms. Labate also was responsible for overseeing budget negotiations that led to five on time budgets. 

Ms. Labate has over 25 years of fiscal and public policy experience, most of which were spent in the budget division.  She also has held leadership positions at the New York State Office of Parks & Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the New York State Division of Housing & Community Renewal. 

Labate holds a BA from the University of Notre Dame and an MPA from Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy.  She began her public service career as a public management fellow.
