Ongoing Project: Distribution of water filters

We are subsidizing the purchase of water filters (http://www.waterfiltersforthepoor.org) that can produce clean water for up to two years.

The use of these filters contributes directly to the health and economic livelihood of the families that use them.

We were fortunate to be able to distribute three free water filters in November. The filters were the gift of an anonymous donor and served as a pilot program to evaluate their usefulness.

The filters were wildly successful: the three families that received them use them everyday to filter all the water that they drink.

We are now offering to pay for two thirds of the price of the filters, which we are receiving at cost (about $30). We are asking asking that interested families provide one third of the cost ($10), although we can make exceptions in cases of extreme poverty.

All the families with whom we have spoken have been willing to pay the cost of $10. They understand that purchasing a filter is cheaper over the long term than buying purified water and cheaper than purchasing the fuel to boil water.
