Here, Brian Stipek and some Catarineco workers take a break from digging and hauling mud.

  • In November, Brian worked with a number of Catarinecos to knock down the damaged house and clean up the property of dirt left by rain and mudslides, as the family wanted.
  • Brian employed workers at fair wages--all of whom were either from families affected by hurricane damage or from the poorer families in the community.

Note the former location of the stove on the wall to the left. The stove is present in the two pictures above.

Location of proposed retaining wall

One of the daughters climbs down the hill on the edge of their property.

  • The property is currently sustained by an old terrace (rocks piled on top of one another), which keeps the houses that are build on the property from sliding down the hill.
  • The family has decided that they want to leave some open space on the property for runoff, which can be considerable even in a normal rainy season.

We want to support the construction of a retaining wall that will prevent erosion of their property.

  • Many of the rocks from the terrace can be reused; but it will be necessary purchase rebar and cement to reinforce the construction.
  • The cost of the materials for the wall is approximately $1300.
  • We plan to share the costs of the wall with a local donor and Brian Stipek.
