Northeast Regional Forensic Institute (NERFI)
In 1999 the Northeast Regional Forensic Institute (NERFI) was established through a partnership with the New York State Police (NYSP) and the University at Albany (UA), with a mission that addresses the current high demand for trained professionals in forensic laboratories while simultaneously fostering the research required to improve the speed, accuracy, and effectiveness of forensic analyses. Since then, NERFI and partners have created undergraduate and graduate forensic science education and training curricula in biology, chemistry and information technology, research and outreach. NERFI has also developed and instructed a 12 graduate credit hour workforce development curriculum for newly hired forensic scientists, as well as instruction on crime scene investigation, quality assurance, ethics, moot court, forensic chemistry, laboratory management, and uncertainty of measurement. The Director and program managers at NERFI collaborate with the forensic science community to devise relevant and timely curricula for professionals in this dynamic and critically important field.
