I was born and raised in the Capital District and now reside in Melrose, New York. I attended Fredonia College in Western New York where I received a B.A. degree in Elementary Education. In 1976 I received a M.S. degree in Special Education from Russell Sage College in Troy, New York.
In 1974 I was hired as a classroom teacher in the Mechanicville School District where I continued to teach until 2004 when I retired to become an assistant professor at Russell Sage College. Although I found it hard to leave the Mechanicville School District as a reading specialist, I am very much enjoying my role as a college professor now.
One of the most rewarding and intense experiences of my life was the completion of my Ph.D. in Reading from the University of Albany in 1995. As a doctoral student, I was given the opportunity to publish an article as a secondary author with my advisor: Walmsley, S.A. & Adams, E. (1993) Realities of Whole Language. Language Arts, 70, 272-280.
In addition, I have published the following:
Franzen, A., Lanford, C. & Adams, E. (2002). Learning to be Literate: A Comparison of Five Urban Early Childhood Programs. Educational Psychology, 94(3), 443-464.
Adams, E. (1994). Signed English. In The Encyclopedia of English Studies and Language Arts. Purves, A. (Ed.)1073-1074, NCTE.
In 2004, as a secondary author of the article Learning to be Literate; A Comparison of Five Early Childhood Programs published in Educational Psychology, I was awarded the IRA Dana Fietelson Award.
I have been an adjunct professor at the university for 15 years now and enjoy the opportunities to collaborate with the fulltime staff. I believe that my 30 years of experience at the elementary school level and my graduate and doctoral coursework have helped me to develop into an effective professor. However, education is a journey, not a destination, and I am continuing to learn and grow as an educator.
