The National Honor Society in Psychology

What is Psi Chi?

Psi Chi is the National Honor Society in Psychology, founded in 1929 for the purpose of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship and advancing the science of psychology. Membership is open to graduate and undergraduate men and women who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests and who meet the minimum requirements.

How do I join?

Students become members by joining the chapter at the school where they are enrolled. Psi Chi chapters are operated by student officers and faculty advisors. Together they induct the members and carry out the goals of the Society. Because the officers and faculty advisors are volunteer and their time is limited, anyone interested in joining Psi Chi should take the initiative and contact the psychology department, the faculty advisor, and/or the local officers.

What are the benefits?

• The intrinsic value of membership is rewarding to the student as he or she is being recognized for outstanding academic achievement.
• Membership may be used as a reference throughout one's lifetime.
• The opportunity to interact with other Psychology Majors and Minors who are interested in similar goals such as securing a job in the field or applying to graduate programs.
  The opportunity to become active in the Department of Psychology by advising and mentoring students and providing peer counseling.
• The possibility of holding office and assuming a leadership role, and learning the skills involved in running a student organization.
• Opportunities are made available to the members for promoting their research, receiving national and international recognition, meeting and interacting with leaders in their field and faculty members at SUNY-Albany, and meeting members of other chapters who also will be future leaders.

Criteria for Membership

Major or minor standing in Psychology at this institution
At least 9 semester hours completed in Psychology courses at this institution
An overall GPA of at least 3.0 and at least 3.25 in Psychology courses
