Department
Overview
At the undergraduate level, the Department of Psychology
offers a B.A. degree at both honors and general levels.
For graduate students, we offer the Ph.D., which can
include the M.A. degree for those who wish to incorporate
the master’s into their doctoral program. The five
areas of specialization available are biopsychology, clinical
psychology, cognitive
psychology, industrial/organizational
psychology, and social-personality
psychology.
Undergraduate and graduate study in psychology
at the University at Albany provide students with
excellent research facilities and opportunities,
flexible, individualized courses of study, and a
productive faculty working closely with students
in a wide range of areas. Indeed, the collegial atmosphere
of our department is something that we take great
pride in. Students, in turn, have consistently ranked
our department quite highly in terms of mentoring,
professional development, and academic preparation
compared to other Clinical PhD programs (data based
on the NAGPS
2000 National Doctoral Program Survey). The
Department of Psychology has a large and vital community
of academic psychologists consisting of 31 fulltime
and adjunct faculty and over 100 doctoral students,
as well as a large undergraduate program. There are
also nearly 60 psychologists working in other departments
at the University at Albany -- from Business to Biology
to Criminal Justice -- and affiliated hospitals such
as Albany Medical
Center and the Capital
District Psychiatric Center. University-wide events
and colloquia by visiting psychologists add to the
ongoing exchange of knowledge and expertise among these
individuals.
Most faculty and students find that the Albany
area itself affords
a good quality of life. The University is located
in close proximity to several cultural and recreational
oportunities, and is within a short drive to several
major cities (e.g., Boston,
New York City), the Adirondacks, Green
Mountains, Catskills,
and Cape Cod.
