Clinical Program Area
The Department of Psychology at the University at Albany, State University of New York, offers the opportunity for exceptional students to pursue graduate study in Clinical Psychology. The Clinical Psychology program is steeped in tradition as one of the best cognitive-behavioral training programs in the country.
Program Overview
Our program integrates scientific and professional training in a series of didactic, practicum, and research experiences. It focuses primarily on a social learning approach to behavior, with cognitive and more strictly behavioral approaches also represented.

The program is structured such that students are able to complete it with a Ph.D in hand in 5 years (four years on campus plus one year for the pre-doctoral internship). We are not a highly competitive program in the sense that students scramble for grades. A small number (8-10) of students are admitted each year. Once admitted, every effort is made to help students finish the program. This is not a program where students are "weeded out"!

Our goal is to educate students for eventual roles as research scientists, academics, clinicians, and problem solvers in the public and/or private sphere. In addition to general departmental requirements, the program consists of a core of courses in the clinical area which are described by following the links below. Beyond this, students consult with faculty advisors to tailor programs to meet their particular needs and goals. Most of our graduates eventually work in academic and/or research settings, and some chose career paths as practitioners.

An important aspect of the program is the opportunity to participate in active clinical research programs conducted by the faculty (see links below). These programs provide the student with direct experience in the integration of scientific-practitioner skills. Typically students fulfill all of their clinical research requirements in these programs. Several clinical research projects exist within the program that help to provide the student with research training in the context of the delivery of clinical services.

The Clinical Psychology program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association. See Committee on Acceditation Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation, American Psychological Association, 750 First Street, N.E., Washington, DC 20002-4242, Ph: (202) 336-5979.
