Welcome to the Department of Psychology
at the University at Albany. Our department
offers the largest undergraduate major in the
College of Arts and Sciences as well as Ph.D.
programs in five specializations: biopsychology/behavioral
neuroscience, clinical, cognitive, industrial/organizational,
and social-personality psychology. Our mission
is to provide excellence in teaching undergraduate
and graduate students and to pursue excellence
in scholarship and research in the interest of
generating new scientific knowledge.
Our undergraduate curriculum is designed to
prepare students for graduate study in psychology
as well as a diversity of other fields requiring
knowledge of psychological principles. Our courses
also provide students with a scientific foundation
for personal growth and development. The skills
acquired by majors in psychology include quantitative
and numeric reasoning, causal reasoning, group
interaction skills, communication skills, and
persuasion and influence skills. The knowledge
and skills psychology majors acquire qualify
them for a wide variety of jobs and careers.
For high-achieving undergraduate students, we
offer a departmental honors program, which affords
students hands-on research experience and the
possibility of conducting supervised independent
studies in faculty laboratories.
Our doctoral programs are geared toward preparing
graduate students for careers in scientific psychology
and scientifically based professional practice.
Our commitment is to provide students with a
broad exposure to psychological theories and
concepts, to teach them methodological skills
necessary to examine, understand, and explain
psychological phenomena, and to create an academic
environment that supports such exploration. Consistent
with the mission of the University at Albany
and the College of Arts and Sciences the program
seeks to generate knowledge through research
and to disseminate this knowledge teaching and
scholarship. Our graduates typically go on to
careers in research or teaching, or they employ
their knowledge in the context of scientifically
based clinical practice or in organizational
settings.
I invite you to explore our website and inform
yourself of the exciting programs that are being
offered in our department.
