March 29, 2006 - University at
Albany President Kermit L. Hall has unveiled the new campus
identifier for the University's downtown campus, symbolizing the
first step of a $2.4 million initiative that will make the
University's three campuses welcoming, and easy to find and
navigate. The University has set a goal of completing the
project in time for students' arrival for the fall semester.

March 29, 2006 - First Niagara
Bank donated $50,000 to the
Center for
Excellence in Cancer Genomics at the University at Albany's
Cancer Research Center on the East Campus. The funds will be
used to purchase equipment that is needed by scientists focused
on research that will uncover the basic mechanisms that drive
cancer progression.

March 29, 2006 - At the invitation
of President Kermit L. Hall, professors Nanzhao Zhou and Liping
Huang of East China Normal University in Shanghai visited
UAlbany from March 29-31. The purpose of their visit was to meet
with various representatives of UAlbany departments and schools
in order to discuss possible areas of cooperation and
collaboration in the future. President Lizhong Yu of East China
Normal University will visit UAlbany sometime in late May. |

L. Hall talked to Professor Erik Hoffmann's undergraduate course
Building Democracies and Markets
about his work on the John F. Kennedy Assassination Records
Review Board. Hoffmann teaches the
political
science course on the uptown campus. Hoffmann noted, "Hall's
public service was unique and invaluable as well as challenging
and time-consuming. The five-member board declassified and
generated eight million documents. Hall's reflections on how
best to balance national security and privacy with openness and
accountability were especially relevant to the themes of this
class." |

student group raised more than $1,000 for Partners in Health,
the healthcare organization Kidder writes about in
Mountains Beyond Mountains. HSA also
made a $1,000 donation to the SUNY Haitian Student Association
Scholarship, which will go to Haiti to sponsor the education of
a university student. |

March 22, 2006 - The University at
Albany has acquired the papers of Joseph E. Persico, the
best-selling author of Roosevelt's Secret
War, Edward R. Murrow: An American Original,
The Imperial Rockefeller, and
co-author of former Secretary of State Colin Powell's
autobiography My American Journey.
Persico's personal and professional papers, documents,
memorabilia, and speeches, many written during his 11 years as a
speechwriter for Governor and later Vice President Nelson
Rockefeller, will be stored in the
University Libraries' M.E.
Grenander Department of Special Collections & Archives.

March 22, 2006 - Vincent Porfirio, a senior
English major from Schoharie, N.Y.,
had the opportunity to view the life of a public university president when he

March 21, 2006 - The Albany City
School District's Board of Education on Tuesday approved the
Albany High-School-UAlbany Alliance for Young Talent. The
program is being set up to curb violence at the high school. A
special classroom has been set up at the University at Albany
for up to 15 at-risk Albany High School Students. The classroom,
at the Science Library, is being staffed by Albany High School
teachers. |

scored 29 points in leading UAlbany to its first-ever America
East Conference championship and NCAA Division I tournament
berth in an 80-67 victory over Vermont before a capacity crowd
of 4,538 fans on March 11 at the Recreation and Convocation
Center. UAlbany will meet Connecticut, one of four teams to
receive No. 1 seeds, in the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's
Basketball Tournament's first round on Friday, March 17, at
Philadelphia's Wachovia Center. |
