Excellence in Professional Service

Each year, the University at Albany honors special members of its community with Excellence Awards denoting exceptional contributions to the life of the campus. Five staff members received this tribute in 2014 for Excellence in Professional Service.

Mr. Paul Berger has a long history with the University at Albany. He began his career with the University in 1988. He is now in his twelfth year as Assistant Chief of Police. He continues to exemplify excellence in his professional duties and in his commitment to the University at Albany

Mr. Berger has excelled in managing a myriad administrative tasks and implementing multiple programs. His professional development has been continuous and impressive. He has kept up-to-date on the best practices in law enforcement and kept the University Police Department on the forefront of safety and security practices. His work has contributed to the safety of the tens of thousands of faculty, staff, students, and visitors who are on our campus each year. Vice President Bouchard described Mr. Berger’s leadership of the University’s Emergency Management Advisory Committee as a “contribution to our community” that is “indicative of his commitment to our campus and to the ultimate safety of its members.”

Mr. Berger is active in community beyond his service to the University at Albany. He has served and made contributions to the State University of New York System as an active member of a number of SUNY level Police and safety committees.        

Mr. Berger is a member of the community that people trust and respect for his professionalism and genuine care for others. He has been described as leading with a “people-centric, empathetic style that builds trust from the very first moment.”

Mr. Berger is an incredibly dedicated, caring, and energetic member of the University at Albany community. His continuing education and professional development activities are too numerous to list. He works hard to educate himself about the most recent developments in his field which will help to keep the University community safe. His commitment to our students, faculty and staff is unwavering. The University at Albany and the State University of New York have good reason to be proud of his commitment and dedication for the wellbeing of all who call the University at Albany home.
