Dr. Mary Ellen Mallia arrived at the University at Albany in 2008. In her five years at the University at Albany, she has made a tremendous impact on the campus, as well as its students, faculty, and staff.  She accepted the position of Director of the newly established Office of Environmental Sustainability and started as its only employee. Despite her limited budget and resources, she excelled at setting and accomplishing goals. She worked with the Environmental Sustainability Task Force to develop “Guiding Principles.” These included energy use, the built environment, education, environmental landscaping, green commerce, water management, and solid and hazardous waste. Dr. Mallia has continued to make important improvements in each of these areas. Her effectors have included a “campaign to integrate sustainability teaching and learning across the curriculum” and “bringing millions of dollars in external grant funding for energy and sustainability projects.” In addition, she has formed relationships with higher education sustainability leaders across New York State.

Dr. Mallia has demonstrated an impressive dedication to the education of our students. Several  letters from students have credited her with getting them more involved in campus activities and benefiting their professional development. One student wrote, “I have become much more involved in the campus community and administration than I would have otherwise” and further explained “she has helped develop me academically , personally, and professionally.” It should be noted that a number of her student related projects have been outside the scope of her official job as Director of Sustainability. Clearly, Dr. Mallia possesses an unwavering dedication to the well-being of the students she mentors.

Dr. Mary Ellen Mallia is truly an outstanding member of the University. Her commitment is recognized by all segments of the campus community, SUNY, New York State, and beyond. The University at Albany and the State University of New York has good reason to be proud of the commitment and dedication Dr. Mallia has for the wellbeing of all who live, work and study at the University at Albany.
