Excellence in Professional Service

Each year, the University at Albany honors special members of its community with Excellence Awards denoting exceptional contributions to the life of the campus. Five staff members received this tribute in 2014 for Excellence in Professional Service.

In her position as University Registrar, Karen Chico Hurst is responsible for fulfilling the instructional mission through scheduling courses and classrooms, and managing the systems through which undergraduate degrees are awarded. She is known for working collaboratively to advance the interests of the University and is well respected by her colleagues. Many of them, including Deans and Vice Presidents seek her advice and guidance. Her wealth of academic, policy, and University knowledge makes her an invaluable asset to the University and if she does not know an answer—a rare occasion--she knows how to get the answer. She regularly offers assistance to other areas of the University by volunteering to make presentations about admissions, the University in the High School, and FERPA to a variety of groups. She volunteers for Scholar’s Day Activities, Parent Orientations, Capital Region Counselors Receptions, and Admitted Student Open Houses. Ms. Chico Hurst works individually with students as requested, to ensure they have a positive admissions and registration experiences. She has been described by her peers as going “out of her way to help students and colleagues alike, making sure the questions are answered, and the problems solved, both quickly and with a smile.”

Ms. Chico Hurst does everything with a ready smile. Her signature optimism, confidence, and unwavering dedication to activities that will improve our institution are infectious. She inspires the colleagues she works with and serves with to work harder, to earn her respect and to achieve common goals.

Ms. Chico Hurst is a dedicated member of the University whose commitment to her colleagues, the students, and the institution are evident in her daily work. The University at Albany and the State University of New York have good reason to be proud of the commitment and dedication this nominee has for the wellbeing of all who call the University at Albany home.
