Chemistry professor Igor Lednev has served as an advisory member on a working group of the White House Subcommittee on Forensic Science, helping to shape the future of forensic science policy and practice at the local, state, and national level. He has given an invited seminar at the FBI laboratories in Quantico, Virginia. He has filed 3 patent applications, and he has obtained significant federal funding for his research. He has published nearly 150 papers, consistently being published in top-tier publications such as the Journal of Physical Chemistry, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Current Science, Analyst, and Chemical Communications, to name a few. Eight of his articles were featured on the covers of the publications of the Royal Chemical Society, the American Chemical Society, and the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.

Dr. Lednev is internationally recognized as a leading expert in the field of Raman spectroscopy, and he is noted by his colleagues for the breadth of projects that he tackles and his willingness to push the boundaries of technology to accomplish his objectives. Two major strands of his research have significant societal impact today: the use of Raman spectroscopy in understanding the peptides involved in diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Type II diabetes; and the application of Raman spectroscopy to forensic identification, an application which would not damage the samples being tested. Dr. Lednev is sought after as a speaker at conferences nationally and around the world, including PITTCON, the largest annual conference on laboratory science, and the biannual International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy.

It must also be noted that Dr. Lednev has an impressive number of high-quality research students whom he has mentored through his lab, and has given significant service to the scientific community, serving on editorial boards for several top journals in the field and on organizing committees for major international conferences.

We congratulate Dr. Lednev on receiving the President’s Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activities.
