Richard J. Farrell, University Registrar, has served in four different administrative positions since he joined the University in 1974. As University Registrar since 1990 he has provided innovative leadership by creating systems that have transformed both that office and the University. The telephone registration system was only the first of a series of technologically based improvements engineered by Farrell. The automated transcript system, which provides 24-hour services in response to approximately 31,000 student requests for transcripts annually; "Schedule 25," a computerized classroom and events scheduling program; and the Degree Audit Reporting System, which greatly enhanced information and record systems while considerably improving the quality of student advisement, are all testimony to his efforts. Each has improved the lives of our students, faculty and staff, and together they have revolutionized the University's capacity to better serve its constituencies.

Prior to becoming University Registrar, Farrell was first an assistant dean of Graduate Studies for 14 years and then for eight years Director of Graduate Admissions and Policy. In each role he garnered the confidence, respect and admiration of his colleagues, supervisors, and the faculty and staff who interacted with him.

Farrell has served as a member and often chair on 23 University councils, committees, and groups, including the University Senate, the Educational Policy Council, and 13 key search committees, including a current one for Vice President for Research. He has served for many years, and continues to serve, voluntarily, on the Commencement Committee, and each year he participates in one of the Summer Planning Conference parent groups. To this last constituency he always extends an invitation to call him if they have any questions or concerns during the course of their association with the University.
