Ray Bromley has devoted extraordinary effort on behalf of students and colleagues at all levels of the University and in the broader professional world. He joined the Department of Geography and Planning in 1985, becoming the second faculty member in the fledging Masters in Urban and Regional Planning program.

He has been the program's director since 1991, assuming the burden for virtually all the advising, recruiting, and alumni job placements involved with the program. He has also handled the bulk of its teaching assignments. Under his management, almost 150 professional planners have graduated with the MPR degree, many finding jobs in the Capital Region or other parts of New York State.

Bromley has also participated extensively in other departmental and University activities. He was a prime force in establishing the interdisciplinary major in Urban Studies and Planning, served on various governance committees, and was the founder of the Lewis Mumford Center for Urban and Regional Research. He has also had, since coming to the University, a joint appointment as professor in the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and is a faculty associate in the Public Policy Program.

He enjoys an international reputation in his field for his research and publications, with more than 20 scholarly articles in academic journals, more than 20 articles in books, and more than 30 consultancy reports, abstracts, reviews and feature articles to his credit.

A noted advocate and scholar in the field of planning, and in particular the areas of metropolitan and regional development strategies, Bromley received a Fulbright Fellowship to Lima, Peru, in 1997. A member of the American Planning Association and the American Institute of Certified Planners, he has made contributions to many organizations in this field, including the Capital District Planning Association. He has been a reviewer for seven refereed journals and six book publishers.
