Marlene F. BolandMarlene F. BolandCenter for Legislative Development (CLD)

Marlene F. Boland, Secretary I in the Center for Legislative Development (CLD), has been a major contributor to the Center's successful projects with Lebanon, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti and Palestine. Dealing with a diverse portfolio of international efforts requires a high degree of flexibility, adaptability and cultural awareness, as well as knowledge of the University's institutional considerations. Boland's performance in these areas has been exemplary.

She has dealt with students and high ranking officers from various countries with consummate diplomacy and consideration, while also coordinating the Center's activities with other parts of the University. Her organizational skills and institutional memory in these tasks have proved invaluable, and her patience and good judgment is constantly in evidence.

Such characteristics have been outstanding since Boland first came to the University in 1974, when she became a typist in the School of Business. She has assumed increasingly more complex assignments and promotions to arrive at her present position. Boland has been an administrative assistant, maintaining budgets and bookkeeping, coordinating staff schedules and priorities, assisting in complex data management tasks, and performing a host of other administrative and professional tasks beyond typical secretarial duties.

Noted for her sharp memory, she recalls names, faces, dates, countries CLD has worked with, foreign contacts, old proposals, previous database efforts, and alumni with a facility that allows the completion of letters, CLD proposals, and reports all the faster. She is thoroughly organized and meticulous in her record-keeping, and is valued as a knowledgeable and dependable staff member. Moreover, she does so with indefatigable good spirit and a sense of humor, which contributes to a productive and pleasant working environment for her colleagues.
