Excellence in Professional Service

Each year, the University at Albany honors special members of its community with Excellence Awards denoting exceptional contributions to the life of the campus. Three staff members received this tribute in 1998 for Excellence in Professional Service.

Hank Shuford, Associate Director of Admissions, has served the University since 1987 and is responsible for a wide variety of tasks associated with general student admissions as well as with all facets of the University's multicultural recruitment efforts. Over the years, he has met all these challenges with enthusiasm, compassion, and acumen.

In the last year, as the University has focused growing attention and resources toward upgrading its undergraduate recruitment efforts, Shuford has been a leader, assisting other staff members in adapting to the new ways of conducting admissions business. He employs such techniques as intensive personal contact with students and use of volunteer "telecounselors" to aid in recruitment, and forges relationships with students and their parents that continue throughout their college years and even afterwards as their careers evolve.

Shuford's contributions to multiculturalism at Albany are among the most significant that have occurred in the last decade, in which the University has seen a 106% increase in freshman applications from students of color; and an increase of 41% in enrollment of students of color as freshmen. Again, his commitment to these students does not end with their admission. He not only keeps in contact, but he uses them to assist in with the recruitment of other outstanding students of color in years to come. In addition, his travel schedule, which takes him to every corner of the state and beyond, is indicative of his personal quest for diversity at Albany.

The winner of 1993's Outstanding Student Affairs Professional, Shuford also coordinates the selection and recruitment process for the University's Educational Opportunity Program transfer program. The success of EOP's graduation rate is in part attributable to his hard work, and his care and continued guidance of Albany's students.

Extremely active in professional organizations, Shuford received the State University of New York College Admission Professional Award in 1997.
