Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Susan McClary, Professor of musicology at UCLA, and a MacArthur fellowship winner, will present a lecture on “Intellectual Creativity in the Age of Computers,” at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center, with a reception to follow in the Futterer Lounge. Fall 1999 Visiting Writers Series. Novelist Alice McDermott, winner of the 1998 National Book Award for Charming Billy, will read from her work at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Performing Arts Center. McDermott will hold an informal seminar at 4 p.m. in Humanities 354.

Lecture by Professor James R. Taylor,
emeritus professor of Communication, Université de Montréal, “What is an Organization?” at 1 p.m. in PC 355, Performing Arts Center, sponsored by the Department of Communication. Taylor is known internationally for his contribution to the study of the structuring properties of communication in organizational settings.

Fall 1999 Classic Film Series. 
“Independent Short Films With Frank and Caroline Mouris.” Independent filmmakers Frank and Caroline Mouris, who specialize in animation and collage, have selected several examples of their work and the work of other independent filmmakers to present a celebration of short film. They will provide film commentary and answer questions immediately following the screenings. Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Page Hall, 135 Western Ave, Downtown Campus. Free and open to the public.

William B. Schade - A 25-Year 
Retrospective An examination of the total work of painting, sculpture, prints and drawings of this exceptionally creative and energetic artist who is a graduate of the University Art Department and faculty member of Sage College (Albany). A catalog with several essays and color illustrations will accompany the exhibition at the University Art Museum. Opening reception Sunday, September 26, 5-7 p.m.

Australian novelist and nonfiction writer Thomas Keneally, Booker Prize-winning author of Schindler’s List, will read from his new nonfiction work, The Great Shame: And the Triumph of the Irish in the English-Speaking World, at 8 p.m. in Page Hall, 135 Western Ave., Downtown Campus. Earlier that afternoon at 4 p.m. in HU 354, Keneally will hold an informal seminar.

October 1, Friday
Friends of the Libraries’ Outing.
“Nearby and Notable”, Friends of the Libraries’ Outing to the New York State Museum’s Rotterdam Storage Facility. 12-4:30 p.m. This full afternoon outing will go to the Museum’s principal storage facility to view a vast collection of artwork that is not on public display. Marty Pottenger, performance artist and writer, will present her Obie-winning theatrical production “City Water Tunnel #3” at 8 p.m. in Page Hall, 135 Western Ave., Downtown Campus. “City Water Tunnel #3” is a multimedia presentation which tells the story of the planning, building and financing of the largest non-defense public-works project in the Western Hemisphere.
