effort that seeks to raise $500 million in private funds to advance

Bertini to Speak
at Graduate Commencement
The University at Albany’s 159th Commencement
is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18.
Catherine Bertini ’71, undersecretary-general
for management to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, will
receive the Medallion of the University and serve as keynote speaker
at the graduate ceremony, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 17 in the
University’s Recreation and Convocation Center (RACC).

A New Look for the Goddess
Minerva, the ancient goddess of wisdom,
technical skill, invention, and the symbol of the University at Albany,
State University of New York, has had a makeover to bring her into the
21st century.
The new University seal, symbol, and logo were unveiled
Thursday, April 10, at that traditional rite of spring known as Fountain
Day.
The figure of Minerva and the Latin motto Sapientia
et sua et docendi causa (Wisdom both for its own sake and for the sake
of teaching) have appeared on the University seal since about 1913.
The date 1844 at the base of the seal signifies the founding of the
New York State Normal School, from which the University at Albany is
directly descended. Full

Professor Bosco to Deliver
Address for Emerson Family May 25
During the centennial observance of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s birth in 1903,
convocations, memorial exercises, and an outpouring of critical studies
devoted to Emerson occurred. In 1996, the Ralph Waldo Emerson Society
designated UAlbany Distinguished Service Professor of English Ronald
A. Bosco co-chair of this year’s bicentennial activities sponsored by
the society and associated learned societies.

Carr, Palmer, IFW Win Bread
and Roses Awards
The Council of Women’s Groups presented this year’s Bread and Roses
Awards to Susan Palmer, Carson Carr, Jr., and Initiatives For Women.
The Bread and Roses Award is given every year by the University at Albany
Council of Women’s Groups to individuals - staff, faculty, administrators,
students and organizations - who have made extraordinary contributions
on behalf of gender equity to enhance the quality of life for women
at the University at Albany. Full
