New York State Writers Institute Visiting Writers Series. Lydia Davis, a short story writer, novelist and translator, will read from and discuss her work at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall, Performing Arts Center. 

Cabaret Night in the Patroon Room featuring light music by “Grand Central Station” from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Admission is $7 per person, includes a dinner buffet.

The Big Deal On Madonna Street, directed by Mario Monicelli, in Italian with English subtitles. A takeoff on classic caper films centers on a clumsy thief who organizes his fellow crooks to rob a jewelry store. Starts at 7:30 p.m. in Page Hall. Free and open to the public.

Healthcare and the Media: The Media’s Role in Shaping Public Opinion, from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. at the New York State Nurses Association Conference Center, 11 Cornell Road, Latham. Acrimony in Albany: The Foster Hall Geological Chart Controversy February 18 - April 30, West Hall, the New York State Museum. Depicts America’s first legal battle over science, which took place in Albany from 1849 to 1851. At issue was a beautifully illustrated geological chart that showed a vertical slice of the earth and the ages and types of rocks that composed it.
