MASTER PLAN

Winter Progress
   By Christine Hanson McKnight

Western Avenue Move: Some 300 University staff and student employees are scheduled to begin moving into two buildings on Western Avenue beginning in mid-April.  The move, which will be completed by June 1, will clear the way for conversion of the current Administration Building into academic space for the College of Arts and Sciences beginning July 1. Two University Place will be the first building occupied, with the Telecommunications Office scheduled to be the first unit to move. The move into 1215 Western Ave. is scheduled to begin April 23 with the Mail Room staff. The last units to move out of the Administration Building will be the offices of the President and the Provost in late May or early June. A complete floor plan and moving schedule are available for review in AD 341. Main telephone and fax numbers for each department can be transferred to the new buildings, but individuals will be assigned new telephone numbers.

Residence Hall Renovations: Rehabilitation of Montauk Hall on Indian Quad will begin in June. The $1.7 million project will include electrical upgrades and improved lighting, ceiling work, recaulking of windows, installation of a state-of-the-art fire and smoke detection system, new tiling on floors, new furniture, and roof work. Montauk will be “off line,” or unoccupied, until completion of the work in December. Steinmetz Hall, on State Quad, will then be taken off line for similar work. Previously, Morris Hall on Colonial Quad was rehabilitated. “Our goal is to establish a continuous program of modernizing our residence halls,” said Donald Delmanzo of the Plant Department.

Ice Skating Rink: The Grounds Department has completed work on an outdoor skating rink using the field between Dutch Quad andthe Humanities Building. The rink, which is 88 feet by 201 feet, is open every day, weather permitting. It is also lighted for evening skating. A "grand opening" was held last week complete with a d.j. and 100 pairs of rental skates for students, faculty and staff.
