Football:
Senior J.T. Herfurth was selected to play in the 2001 Hula
Bowl, a college all-star game that was televised nationally on January
20 by ESPN. Herfurth, a 6-foot-6, 300-pound offensive tackle, was
named to the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association,
and Football Gazette Division I-AA All-America squads. Head coach
Bob Ford served as an assistant coach at the Hula Bowl. The
Great Danes finished 5-6 overall and 5-3 in Northeast Conference.
Field
Hockey:
Sophomore Angie Stegel led the Great Danes in scoring with
17 goals and seven assists. Albany posted its second consecutive winning
campaign as a Division I program with a 10-8 record.
Men’s
Soccer:
The Great Danes finished with an 8-7-3 record under first-year coach
Johan Aarnio, and competed in the Atlantic Soccer Conference
for the first time. Nick Southworth was one of 11 players on
the first-team all-conference unit. Southworth’s 22 points (9 goals,
4 assists) was the highest single-season total by a UAlbany player
since 1996.
Volleyball:
Alissa Gibbs was a bright spot in a tough season for the program,
which finished at 3-24. Gibbs, a sophomore outside hitter, received
first-team All-Independent honors. She averaged 3.28 kills, 3.22 digs,
0.42 service aces and 0.19 blocks, and recorded 12 double-doubles
in kills and digs.
Women’s
Soccer:
UAlbany made steady improvement in head coach Joanna Tomasino’s
first season, posting a 3-15 record. Sophomores Janee’ Feliciano
(3 goals, 4 assists) and Erin Stanek (3 goals, 2 assists) form
a solid nucleus for the future.
Women’s
Golf:
Sophomore Katie Wachtl led the team with a 94.3 stroke average
in eight rounds played. The Great Danes competed in the Dartmouth,
Princeton and Rutgers tournaments.
Women’s
Tennis:
The Great Danes were 2-3 in dual matches, including victories over
Buffalo and Marist. Seniors Erinn Langford and Jennifer
Hahn each moved past the 30-career win mark in both singles and
doubles.
Men’s
Cross Country:
Jamie Rodriguez, a junior, was the Stanford Invitational’s
college open section champion and first at Syracuse’s Orange Classic.
Rodriguez, who had four top-10 finishes overall, took 19th at the
NCAA Northeast Regional in November.
Women’s
Cross Country:
Freshman Jessica Walton won both the 34th annual Albany Invitational
and Syracuse’s Orange Classic, and was second at the ECAC Division
I championships.

Women’s
Basketball:
Senior Liz Tucker earned first-team All-Independent honors.
Tucker, a co-captain from Plaistow, N.H., led her club in scoring
(13.0 ppg), rebounding (6.4 pg), assists (3.1 pg) and steals (1.9
pg). Tucker, who also was a Verizon District I all-academic choice
with a 3.55 cumulative grade point average, is the only player in
school history to combine for more than 1,000 points, 600 rebounds,
300 assists and 200 steals in a career. Albany completed its season
with a 5-22 record.

Men’s
Basketball:
Freshman guard E.J. Gallup was voted to the Division I All-Independent
second team. Gallup led the Great Danes in scoring at 17.4 points
per game and totaled the most points (487) by a frosh since Gary Holway
in 1955-56. Will Brand, a 6-foot-5 junior, became the 24th
player in school history to score 1,000 career points. Brand, who
averaged 14.0 points and 6.9 rebounds, will enter his final season
ranked 15th on the career scoring list with 1,118 points. UAlbany
finished with a 6-22 record in its final year as a Division I independent.
Women’s
Indoor Track:
Albany’s 4x800-meter relay placed seventh at the ECAC championships.
The squad of Jessica Walton, Diane Matthews, Jessica Burger
and Megan Roeder shaved more than 13 seconds off the school
record with a time of 9:08.42 in qualifying. Walton, a freshman, also
helped break marks in the 1,000-meter run and distance medley relay.
Men’s
Indoor Track:
Senior triple jumper Ronald Edmundson placed eighth at the IC4A championships
with a school-record leap of 48-feet, 0.50-inches. Jamie Rodriguez
was ninth in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:35.58. Alix
Rodriques, an IC4A qualifier in the 55- and 200-dashes, shattered
school standards in both events during the season.
