Science Library Opened in October, 1999, the new library was the first academic building constructed on campus in three decades. The core of the $26 million, three-story, 143,000 net-square foot building is the Science Library. Its shelves contain about 500,000 volumes (with another 100,000 in storage) and it offers state-of-the-art technological resources and specialized services for students engaged in scientific study and research. The new library building's third floor is home to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, which serves as the University's collective memory, with documentation going back to UAlbany’s founding in 1844.
University Library The so-called "old library," on the western side of the academic podium, has been overhauled and renovated in conjunction with the opening of the new library building. The first task was to decompress previously cramped stacks, which were designed to hold 800,000 volumes but had been squeezed to hold 1.7 million. Now, the library contains about 1 million volumes of materials serving the fine and performing arts, business, education, the social sciences and humanities. Users enjoy additional computer workstations, expanded lounge areas and a newly furnished and updated current periodicals reading room with 5,673 periodicals.
