unveils a $1 million rehabilitation of 27 of its most
heavily used classrooms, the first phase of a multi-year
commitment to facilities improvement and innovation.
The project focuses on essential design elements that
directly affect classroom learning such as temperature,
lighting and furniture and the accommodation of state-of-the-art

Distance Learning Autism Program One of Five Worldwide
Approved for Professional Certification
The University at Albany's
autism program is now one of only five programs in the
world approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification
Board Inc. (BACB) to offer a distance learning course
sequence that applies toward certification. The BACB
is a nonprofit corporation established to meet professional
credentialing needs identified by behavior analysts,
state governments and consumers of behavior analysis

Researcher Finds Coronary Bypass Patients Return to
Hospital Within 30 Days of Discharge
Study Published in
JAMA, August 13
About 13 percent of patients discharged from a hospital
following coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
are readmitted within 30 days for reasons related to
the surgery, according to a study in the August 13 issue
of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
Edward Hannan of the University at Albany's School of
Public Health was lead author of the study. Full

Cars to Reduce Campus Air and Noise Pollution
The University at Albany
has received 10 pollution-reducing Global Electric Motorcars
(GEM) cars from DaimlerChrysler and the New York Power
Authority (NYPA). The GEM cars are part of 130 electric
vehicles donated to the State University of New York,

Senator Bruno heads fund-raising
effort as honorary chairman of "The Fund for Memory
and Hope"
Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno joined University
at Albany President Karen R. Hitchcock at a groundbreaking
ceremony for the Gen*NY*Sis Center for Excellence in
Cancer Genomics at the University's East Campus in Rensselaer.
The new cancer research initiative, announced last September
by Senator Bruno with $22.5 million in start-up funding
from the state's Gen*NY*Sis (Generating Employment Through
New York Science) economic development program, will
enlist industry and science partners in cutting-edge
investigations into the causes and treatment of cancer.
It will also create more than 100 new Capital Region

School of Social Welfare has established the Child Welfare,
Drug Abuse and Intergenerational Risk Center (CWDAIR

services for parents in the child welfare system with

Identity Counts for Hispanic Americans
The fastest growing segment of Hispanic Americans, soon
to be a majority, identifies as neither white nor black.
These people are less affluent than "white"
Hispanics but considerably more advantaged than "black"
Hispanics, according to a new report by University at
Albany's Lewis Mumford Center. They also live in very
different kinds of neighborhoods. Full

The master's degree program in Africana Studies
at the University at Albany has been recognized as one
of the top 10 in the nation by Black Issues in Higher
Education magazine. The "Special Report on the
Top 100 Degree Producers 2003," which ranked graduate

Intergovernmental Info Systems
CGI, Keane and Microsoft Lend Technology and Expertise
to Develop Prototype
Today, state and local governments are connected by
numerous and distinct information systems, each devoted
to a single purpose. The University at Albany’s Center
for Technology in Government (CTG) has initiated a broad
collaborative partnership to build and evaluate a State-Local
Internet Gateway Prototype to test an innovative alternative
for intergovernmental work. The prototype is designed
to enable participating agencies and localities to find
information, conduct a variety of business processes
and form strategic working relationships through one
