Top Athletes :
Seniors Michael Oliva and Dawn DiMicco are the University at Albany’s male and female athletes of the year. Oliva, a center fielder, earned All-Northeast Region and All-New York State Baseball Conference recognition. He led the conference and was 15th nationally with a .428 batting average. DiMicco, who won a combined eight varsity letters in lacrosse and basketball, finished her lacrosse career as the school’s all-time scorer with 182 points.

Merit Medals:
J.T. Herfurth and Mariah Martin were honored at the inaugural Great Dane Awards on May 5 with ECAC Merit Medals as the University’s top senior male and female student-athletes. Herfurth, an All-America offensive lineman in football, posted a 3.89 grade point average in sociology with a minor in psychology. Martin, a captain on the field hockey team, had a 3.94 GPA in business administration with a minor in economics.

Baseball:
Steve Checksfield and Michael Oliva received All-ECAC honors and were among a group of six players who were named to the All-New York State Baseball Conference squad. Checksfield, who was drafted by the Houston Astros in June, is the school’s career leader in home runs (40) and RBI (168). Oliva is the all-time leader in hits (229), doubles (51) and stolen bases (58).

Softball:
The Great Danes finished with a 22-25 record in their second year as a Division I Independent. Shortstop Valerie Terry was the team’s top player with a .403 batting average. She established UAlbany single-season records with 49 stolen bases and 47 runs.

Women’s Lacrosse:
The Great Danes’ all-time scorer, Dawn DiMicco, who had 25 goals and 16 assists this spring, finished second among Division I leaders in ground balls at 5.73 per game.

Men's Lacrosse :
Head coach Scott Marr and his first team faced the likes of Massachusetts and Rutgers en route to a 3-8 record. The Great Danes improved at season’s end behind junior attacker Jim Lindsay, who led the club with 14 goals and 23 assists. Richie Cavaluzzo was rated 25th among the nation’s best in face-off percentage (.529).

 

 

Men’s Outdoor Track:
Senior Ronald Edmundson leaped a season-best 49-feet, 3.75-inches to finish sixth at the 125th IC4A championships. Jamie Rodriguez became the first athlete in school history to win an individual event at Penn Relays. Rodriguez won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:29.55 in a 41-runner field.

Women’s Outdoor Track:
UAlbany’s 4x800-meter relay team of Jessica Walton, Jessica Burger, Diane Matthews and Dinnah Decatus set a school record of 9:08.23 in qualifying at the ECAC championships. Tammy Freeman, a junior sprinter, led the 4x400 relay to a first-place finish at the Penn Relays.

Women’s Tennis:
Senior Erinn Langford was recognized as the program’s best performer. She ended her four-year career with 34 singles victories and 44 wins in doubles play.
