Master of Arts, music (organ performance), 1977 The University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa (student of Delbert Disselhorst, Gerhard Krapf). Doctor of Musical Arts in progress, University of Iowa (student of Delores Bruch). Major workshop experiences: Royal School of Church Music summer course, England, 1985. North German Organ Academy, 1985. Masterclass performances for Arthur Poister, Russell Saunders. Employment: Currently Broadband Technician, Time Warner Cable, Milwaukee Division Organist, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Milwaukee (Casavant, op. 2774, 1964). Moved to Milwaukee for another full-time Catholic position, 1999, which proved unsatisfactory. On moving to another position, I began to re-assess my commitment to full-time church music ministry, and pursued other interests which led to my current day job in the broadband industry. (This move was not without precedent, since I had previous periods of technological employment, see below.) 1989-1998, Director of Music at Church of the Annunciation, Minneapolis, a long tenure where I served as director of three choirs, organist, and supervisor of Annunciation Music Series. As things evolved, I came up with one particular blend of classic and "contemporary" Catholic music, using appropriate instrumentation for particular selections, and using the pipe organ in conventional and less conventional ways! Previous positions in Roman Catholic, Episcopal, and Lutheran churches. Related information: Member of American Guild of Organists; Association of Anglican Musicians; Worship Board, Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, 1991-1998 (chairman of Music Committee, fall 1993 and following). Performances broadcast on American Public Media's "Pipedreams," including: Tournemire, "Paraphrase-Carillon" from Assumption Suite (L'Orgue mystique) Selections from 100th anniversary program on the 1891 Schuelke organ, St. Boniface Church, New Vienna, Iowa (IA). Continual interest in electronic technology: amateur radio, audio and radio production (four years' experience as producer and morning host, KSUI-FM, Iowa City, IA, ending in 1981), broadcast engineering (chief engineer, KRNA, Iowa City, ending in 1985). A history of experiments with synthesizers in conjunction with pipe organ and other instruments. Most successful program April 18, 1993 (with two other collaborators, Frank Winkels and Larry Reynolds): "Dueling Keyboards" -- piano, organ, harpsichord, synthesizers, in a populist, transcription-oriented program. Also featured on the 1993 "Pipedreams Premieres" CD from Minnesota Public Radio. From a "center" in the German Lutheran tradition, growing up in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod with a good acquaintance with the German chorale tradition (in the "rhythmic" versions!), I have broadened my musical range to the Anglican choral and organ tradition. An open ear to the musical world around me keeps me interested in various popular music trends, which led to more openness to a somewhat "blended" approach to church music ministry, including use of synthesizer with the pipe organ. The move to part-time church music work with a fine organ keeps me centered now in quality service playing in the classic tradition. Still, the sacred music world is very diverse, so some selections will use an appropriate piano or synthesizer or drum accompaniment as needed, drawing on some of those eclectic skills honed over the years.
