At work (first=favorite):  Vax/VMS, Sun/Unix, Mac, IBM-PC clone
(still thankfully DOS-only, no Windows). At home: Mac IIvx, and a
14-year-old Apple IIe which I keep around for developing
small/simple embedded systems. I generally tend to avoid the use of
commercially-produced application programs in favor of writing my
own software, except for a few major indispensable things (word
processor, telnet program, web browser, printed circuit CAD, and
one of these days a music sequencing & notation package). I
actually don't use a computer very much at home, partly due to time
reasons, partly due to getting enough of a computer "fix" at work.
 
Musical instruments, proficiency, and listening interests:
 
Organ at home (in working condition):  Lowrey model H-1
(spinet...oh well...better than nothing).
 
Piano:  Steinway model L with QRS Pianomation.
 
I play theater organ (fair to middling amateur, not too bad
considering how long I was away from it, but not real great), Piano
(I used to be very good back when I took lessons and practiced),
flute (not so good), Xylophone/marimba/vibes (only miniscule
experience with these)
 
I usually listen to alternative/progressive rock, theater organ,
music falsely categorized as "jazz", music accurately categorized
as "jazz", non-theater organ. I also recently began listening
fairly often to classical music. I occasionally listen to "classic
rock", reggae, and blues.
 
Favorite organist:  Sidney Torch.
 
Musical background:
 
I began playing organ by ear at the age of 6.  I started piano
lessons 2 years later and continued for 9 years. I took organ
lessons at church for a year or two. I went with my parents to
numerous theater organ concerts and occasional open consoles when I
was a child. I come from a musical family; my grandfather was a
high school music teacher and composed several pieces. My dad plays
organ, piano, and saxophone; he installed 6 ranks of a 2/8
Wurlitzer in his house. My brother plays drums, guitar, piano, and
sings and has been in several local rock bands. I played piano and
electric piano in jazz bands in high school and college. My
interest in organ playing (and to some extent, listening)
substantially waned from about 1976 to 1991. This was in part due
to my getting tired of playing/hearing the same songs over and over
again, and being too lazy to build/remember a decent repertoire of
my own. I have since resolved to try to change this, at least by
making an effort to learn and play music, from a variety of eras
(although I lean toward more contemporary stuff), that is (for the
most part) not typically heard in theater organ concerts and
recordings.
 
Long-term Project:
 
I have been collecting parts, with the eventual goal of building a
theater organ in my home "the wrong way" (i.e. from unrelated
parts). If I ever get around to actually putting it together, it
will be electric action (mostly), with somewhere between 5 and 18
ranks, and use a computer-based relay of my own design (a file is
available via email which describes the relay design in detail).
After four years of collecting things, I have a 3-manual Robert
Morton console, 15 ranks of various pipework, plus miscellaneous
other stuff, and not much storage space left for anything more.
However, finding the time to actually do anything with this stuff
has proven difficult, and I really have no idea when I'll get
anything going.
 
Other interests:
 
Computers, electronics, home modification ("improvement" is
definitely too strong a word), bicycling, cats.
