Bruce Fletcher -------------- I am the organist and choirmaster at the 12th century (Anglican) parish church of Ashchurch about 3 miles from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. (Details of the Tewkesbury Abbey organs can be found on the Web at http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~ngeog/Tewkesbury/Abbey.html - note that the rebuild of the Milton organ is now completed and it is in regular use. The Grove organ is in need of some attention.). I have been playing the organ since I was 11 (I am now 54) and have played at a variety of churches and chapels (Methodist, United Reformed Church, Church of Scotland, Episcopalian, etc.) in England and Scotland. Although I have no formal musical qualifications I found that my experience was very useful when I got involved in the Anglican rite about 4 years ago when I moved into the area and took over from the previous organist when he left. Since then I have had to learn about psalms, responses and all the other Anglican traditions. I am a traditionalist at heart but realise that modern "worship songs" play a part in the modern liturgy (but why are they usually so musically bland ?). Our rector has been in post for about 18 months and she (yes, she!) is very supportive of the musical side of worship. We have a mixture of BCP and Rite A: Sunday services are usually BCP for 8 am Communion, Rite A for 10 am Parish Communion and BCP for 6:30 pm Evensong. I am a civil servant and am involved in the supervision of the development of bespoke applications for Windows (3.1 and NT) users. I live about 12 miles from Gloucester to the south and 12 miles from Worcester to the north so I can attend organ recitals at both Tewkesbury, Worcester and Gloucester. I was in Gloucester Cathedral last night (Sat 7 Feb 98) to hear David Briggs give a recital (music by Mozart, JS Bach, Franck, Howells and Reubke) in aid of the Three Choirs Festival. I will try to post details of forthcoming recitals in the area. Although I am a member of the Gloucestershire Organists Association I do not always have the time to attend branch meetings or events. My own tastes in organ music are Franck, Rheinberger, Howells and Sumsion. I have tried to listen to and understand Messiaen and the like but have had to admit defeat.
