In The Raw

The UAlbany Performing Arts Center, operating under the auspices of the College of Arts and Sciences and with support from the University at Albany Foundation and University Auxiliary Services, is pleased to present 10 Hairy Legs on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at 7:30pm.  The program will include works choreographed by Doug Elkins, Heidi Latsky, David Parker, Stephen Petronio and Meagan Williams. The company’s performance is the second offering in the Dance in Albany series, a joint series sponsored by The Egg and UAlbany Performing Arts Center.  It will be performed In the Raw, a format conceived and implemented three seasons ago.

10 Hairy Legs is an all-male repertory dance company that performs existing and newly commissioned works. Founded in 2012 by Randy James, the company celebrates and explores the tremendous technical and emotional range of today’s male dancer.  James has significantly impacted the field of dance for more than three decades locally, regionally, nationally and internationally as a highly regarded dancer, choreographer, teacher, guest lecturer, panelist and staunch advocate of the arts. As a choreographer, he has created more than 40 works on his own companies and on 16 other professional companies throughout the United States, garnering positive reviews from The New York Times and The Village Voice. As an Associate Professor of Dance, James has been a member of the dance faculty at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University since 1998.

The Performing Arts Center’s In the Raw format features dance companies in studio performances of their work.  This format strips down the production values so that the essence of the dance is brought to the forefront.  When you watch great dancers from a distance — say two dozen rows back from the proscenium stage — you admire their craft. When you watch them from a few feet away, you fall in love,” claimed Tresca Weinstein in the Times Union about the inaugural performance of the series. With just over 100 seats available, the setting is intimate, the performers are up close and personal and there is ample opportunity for dialogue between artists and audience.  Artistic Director Randy James will give a short introduction to each work on the program. There will also be a post-show reception in the lounge furthering the opportunity for conversation between spectators and performers.

A limited number of tickets are still available for the performance on October 12.  Advance tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for students, seniors and UAlbany faculty-staff.  Tickets purchased on the day of the show (pending availability) are $20 for the general public and $15 for students, seniors and UAlbany faculty-staff.  For reservations and further information, contact the Box Office at (518) 442-3997.

Prior to the performance, the company will be in residence at UAlbany for three days.  The company will offer master classes for dance students at Skidmore and Union Colleges as well as the Emma Willard School.  They will also offer a special performance for elementary school students.

Upcoming performances in the Dance in Albany series include Philadelphia’s Raphael Xavier on November 7 and Montreal’s RUBBERBANDance Group on April 3 both at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center as well as all of the following at The Egg: Collage Dance Collective on October 20, Bridgman/Packer Dance on February 16, Dublin Irish Dance Company on March 6, MOMIX on March 16, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo on April 20 and the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company on May 5.
