The Department of Music and Theatre is pleased to present guest artist Vedrana Kalas in a concert entitled Open Your Heart - Ouvre Ton Coeur - Otvori Svoju Dušu on Friday, February 17, 2017 at 7:30pm at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.  The soprano will be joined by pianist Michael Clement to perform folk and gypsy tunes by Ravel, Bizet, Dvorak and former Yugoslav composers in a concert dedicated to underprivileged children of her native country of Bosnia.  A war survivor, Kalas created the program in an effort to raise awareness of the needs of youth who have been affected by war throughout the world.

After emigrating from Bosnia as a teenager, Kalas graduated from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam.  Throughout her training she has worked with world renowned artists such as Justino Diaz, Sherrill Milnes, Warren Jones and John Wustman.  Her operatic repertoire includes Mimi (La Boheme), Norina (Don Pasquale), Violetta (La Traviata), Donna Anna and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Euridice (Orfeo ed Euridice), Vitellia (La Clemenza di Tito), Suor Genovieffa (Suor Angelica) and Constanze (Dialogues des Carmelites).  Equally comfortable as a concert soloist, she has performed with Nacre Dance, Opera Saratoga, Octavo Singers, Jubilate Singers, Mendelssohn Club of Albany and Albany Pro Musica.

Following her affinity for cultures and languages, Kalas is also an English as a Second Language teacher at North Colonie School District.

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for students, seniors & UAlbany faculty/staff and may be purchased through the Performing Arts Center Box Office. For further information, contact the Box Office at (518) 442-3997.
