The University at Albany Department of Music is pleased to present its vocal students performing three comic one act operas in an Opera Workshop on Friday, April 4, 2014 at 7:30pm at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.  Staged by artistic staff from Hubbard Hall Opera Theatre, the students will perform Polka by Patrick Soluri, Frustration by Sheldon Harnick and A Game of Chance bySeymour Barab.

Polka is Soluri’s 2012 chamber opera with a libretto by Royce Vavreck set at a wedding reception in 1993.  From 89 year old Pulitzer Prize and multiple Tony Award winner Sheldon Harnick, perhaps best known for his work with composer Jerry Bock in Fiddler on the Roof and Fiorello!, Frustration is a comedy about Mélisande and her supposed Pelléas, who, being French but singing in English, express themselves in a delightful Franglais.  Seymour Barab’s 1956 opera with text by Evelyn Manacher Draper is based on the play All on a Summer’s Day by Florence Ryerson and Colin Clements.  In A Game of Chance, three women long for something more in their lives but, when a messenger of fate grants them their desires, they realize their wishes are different than they imagined.

Featured singers include Joshua Gurwitz, Fiona Hanrahan, Katherine Kulikowski, Ariana London, Shiho Matsuoka, Jessica Mitchell, Noni Murphy, Olga Neroni, Kelly Ortiz, Alyssa Pyle and Kaelyn Wood performing under the direction of Alixina Jones and Jason Dolmetsch with piano accompaniment by Trevor Kaulbaugh.

Tickets are $6 for the general public and $3 for students, seniors & UAlbany faculty/staff and may be purchased through the Performing Arts Center Box Office. For further information, contact the Box Office at (518) 442-3997.
